Spray Painting Plastic Patio Furniture

I have been wondering about spray painting plastic patio furniture for quite a while, but wasn’t sure how it would look. I have this plastic Bamboo Wicker style patio furniture that has been around for the past 17 years. It has been through four moves and sat out in the rainy, hot, and cold weather for every one of those years. I have six chairs, a large table with a base, and a small side table.  At the time, I purchased it from a friend who was just starting a cottage retail business and paid about $600.00 for the set. It is very heavy-duty and well constructed. It is not only sentimental to me, it is hard to find such well made furniture at that price. I have to admit, the furniture has seen better days. Some of the weaved pieces have become brittle and broken off or ripped in some places. I have splattered paint on every piece from doing various paint projects on them, and the green color has faded from the sun.

I was tired of looking at it so I decided it was time for a makeover. At first it was just going to paint the table tops, but I just couldn’t stop myself. I just kept on spraying and I am so happy with the outcome. Before I started spraying, I had to do some repairs. I used Liquid Nails to patch all of the broken pieces. Other than that and a little cleaning, there is no other prep work required.

Selecting the Paint

When choosing my spray paint, I chose a neutral color which is Nutmeg. There are a lot of options in colors to select from such as bright colors, pastel colors, or metallic colors. I also preferred to use a satin sheen rather than using a semi-gloss or high gloss. a satin finish will still have a somewhat shiny appearance. to get the full coverage when spray painting plastic patio furniture.

Materials

• Caulking Gun
• Liquid Nails
• Rust-oleum (ultra cover paint & prime) Spray Paint
• Drop cloth to cover floor under the furniture

Instructions

• Clean furniture with light dish soap and water. Let dry.
• Apply Liquid Nails to all areas that need repair. Allow it to dry until it becomes hard. Approx. 24 hours or overnight.
• Place furniture in well ventilated area and where it will not get over spray on surrounding area.
• Spray lightly about six inches away to prevent too much paint being applied at once. This causes dripping. Let dry. Approx. 1 hour.
• Repeat spraying process until desired coverage completed.

After repairing and applying the paint, you can always reapply more Liquid Nails to make the repairs less noticeable. It is much easier to do the repairs in layers until you get the outcome you want. You will also need to reapply paint until the color blends together. I just cover the noticeable repairs with place mats or a table-cloth when we are entertaining guests.

Conclusion

My time needed to complete the project was about 4 hours in two days. I had to use 8 cans of paint at $3.99 per can before taxes. The Liquid Nails cost is about $4.99 before tax. I was able to get a whole new look and repaired patio set for less than $40.00. The paint holds up well, it is not sticky or tacky and it washes well.
